I can not ascertain specifically when the “Oval P” was initially used depending on my work but I might make this observation. The Oval P evidence stamp is just uncovered on barrels which have a Model 3 barrel deal with which is situated around the still left facet from the barrel. This situation wasn't frequent right until 1910 for your Design 1892 rifles. No barrel that has certainly one of the earlier barrel tackle styles or best of barrel positions are marked by having an “Oval P” evidence.

Depending on what I have observed and skim in other resources, the oval (P) proof mark was not introduced till 1908. Prior to that point, Winchester marked “OF” (outside the house equipped) on the bottom from the barrel under the forend inventory for that mail buy barrels. I have see several of these on Winchester shotgun cleaning guide Design 1885 Single Shot Rifles that predate 1908.
